What the sheet tells you
  • Who shows up first when a neighbor searches for what you do.Google's answer and the AI answer, with names. Whether one of them is you.
  • Where you lose them.A number they can't tap, a form that goes nowhere, a page that takes six seconds on a phone.
  • What to fix first. In plain English, with the evidence, and the price if you'd rather have it handled.

These are two different problems wearing the same complaint

"We're missing calls" gets used for two different failures, and the fix is different depending on which one it actually is. Problem one: people who want to call you can't dial easily, usually because your website's phone number isn't a tappable link, so a mobile visitor has to memorize it, switch apps, and type it in by hand. Problem two: people do call, and nobody picks up, because you're on a roof, mid-job, or it's 7pm on a Saturday.

Tap-to-call fixes problem one. An AI receptionist fixes problem two. Most shops actually have both problems at once, but they're worth diagnosing separately, because tap-to-call is a 30-minute fix and an AI receptionist is an ongoing service, and paying for the second one doesn't help if the first one is what's actually broken.

02

How to tell which one you have

Open your website on your own phone and tap your phone number. If the dialer opens with the number already filled in, tap-to-call is already working and that's not your problem. If nothing happens or your phone tries to select the text instead, every mobile visitor is hitting that wall before they ever get to problem two.

Then check your actual call log for the last month, separate from the website: how many calls went to voicemail, and how many of those voicemails got a callback the same day? If a meaningful chunk of your inbound volume is ringing through and going unanswered, that's the problem an AI receptionist is built to close, not the tap-to-call fix.

If you want the phone answered without hiring, the AI receptionist page has the prices and a live demo number. AI receptionist costs.

03

What tap-to-call actually is

It's one line of code: a phone number wrapped in a tel: link instead of plain text, so tapping it opens the phone's dialer directly. It costs nothing beyond the time to add it, works the same on any builder or custom site, and the only real decision is placement: header, a sticky mobile button, and the footer, on every page, not just the homepage. It doesn't require choosing a vendor or a monthly plan.

04

What an AI receptionist actually is

It's a phone-answering system, built on AI voice technology, that picks up calls you miss, answers basic questions, and gets you the caller's details so you can call back with context instead of cold. It's a genuine substitute for a live answering service on the calls you'd otherwise lose, not a replacement for talking to your regular customers yourself.

The market for this ranges from AI-specific services to traditional live-agent answering services repackaged with a dashboard. As a point of reference, one established live-agent virtual receptionist service (Smith.ai) prices its entry tier at $300/month for 30 calls, with overage calls billed separately (smith.ai/pricing). AI-only receptionist services built specifically for missed-call recovery are typically priced lower than that, since they're not billing for a human agent's time on every call.

05

The math that decides it

Tap-to-call is close to free, so there's no real math needed there, just do it. An AI receptionist is a recurring cost, so it's worth a rough gut check before signing up: how many calls do you estimate go unanswered in a typical week, and what's an average job worth if even one of those calls turns into work? For most one- and two-truck shops, a single missed emergency call that would've been a $400 to $1,500 job pays for a month of missed-call coverage on its own. The question isn't whether it's worth it in theory, it's whether your actual missed-call volume is high enough to make it worth it in practice, which is exactly what the call-log check earlier in this guide is for.

Field note

Do both if you have both problems. Tap-to-call is a one-time fix with no ongoing decision. An AI receptionist is worth the monthly cost specifically when your missed-call volume is real, which the call-log check tells you directly.

06

Where this fits into a Run or Grow plan

Every site built under either plan ships with tap-to-call wired in as standard, so it's not something you have to remember to ask for. Missed-call text-back and an AI-handled response to every form and call, day or night, are part of the Grow plan ($297/mo), on top of everything in Run ($97/mo). Both start with a 14-day free trial, card on file, and the site build itself is free either way. If tap-to-call is your only real gap, Run covers it. If missed calls after hours are actually costing you jobs, that's the case for Grow.

Common questions

Questions that come up

Can I add tap-to-call myself without hiring anyone?

Yes. It's one line of HTML (a tel: link) that every mainstream website builder supports through its normal link editor. No developer or service is required.

Does an AI receptionist sound robotic to callers?

Modern AI voice systems have improved a lot, but callers can generally tell. What matters more than sounding perfectly human is whether the call gets answered, the right information gets captured, and you get a fast, accurate notification so you can follow up. A missed call that goes to voicemail loses more jobs than an AI-answered call that sounds slightly synthetic.

Do I need an AI receptionist if I already have voicemail?

Voicemail only helps if people leave a message and you call back fast, and a lot of callers on a home-service search hang up and call the next result instead of leaving one. An AI receptionist answers live instead of routing to voicemail, which is the actual difference in outcome, not just a nicer greeting.

Rather I just did this?

Fair. The audit shows where your site actually stands in about a minute, then you decide. No email required, no pressure, just the truth.
